It’s time to finish our jeans! We’ll add the final topstitching to the fly, sew the buttonholes, attach the buttons, and sew the hems.

EDGESTITCH ZIPPER ON THE WEARER’S RIGHT SIDE

Using a zipper foot, edgestitch the wearer’s right side zipper, starting at the top of the waistband and meeting the edgestitch from step 13. Switch back to a regular sewing foot.

TOPSTITCH FLY ON THE WEARER’S LEFT SIDE

Starting at the top of the wearer’s left side, topstitch the fly. If you are sewing with regular thread, you can connect to the stitching used to secure the fly guard. If you are sewing with topstitching thread, connect to the stitching at the fly shield tack and use the previous stitching as a guide.

SEW BUTTONHOLES

Try on the jeans to test the buttonhole placement provided. Add the center front buttonhole to the wearer’s left front. There is a smaller buttonhole on the fly extension. You can adjust the size of the buttonhole based on the size of your buttons. Use fray check before opening the buttonholes.

SEW BUTTONS

Sew buttons on the wearer’s right side at the center front and the wearer’s left side inside the waistband. Use the buttonholes to mark the placement.

PREP THE HEM

Turn the jeans wrong side out. Press the hem edge under 1/2” (1.25 cm) wrong sides together.

HEM

Fold the hem edge over 2” (5 cm). Pin and edgestitch the hem in place.
