In this post, we are going over our last steps to finish the Ivie Skirt.
SKIRT | SEW THE SKIRT WAIST DRAWSTRING TIES
With the wrong sides together, press the short ends in at 3/8” (1 cm). With the wrong sides together, fold the ties in half lengthwise and press to create a fold line.
Open and press the cut edges to meet the center fold line. Fold again to create a 5/8” (1.5 cm) wide drawstring.
Edgestitch the long side and one short end. Leave one end open to insert the waist elastic. We have a tip on how to finish the ends of your drawstrings; you can find the video here.
SKIRT | INSERT THE ELASTIC TO THE WAIST DRAWSTRING TIES
Use the cut chart on page 7 to cut your waist elastic length. Insert the elastic inside the ties at the open end. Secure the elastic with a zig zag stitch, backstitching a few times to secure this seam. Repeat for the other end of the elastic to make one long drawstring with fabric ties at each end of the elastic. Set aside.
SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND
With the right sides together, sew the center back seam of the skirt waistband, marked by double notches. Finish and press the seam to one side.
With the right sides together, sew the center front seam, which should be finished. Start at the top, stopping at the first “+” mark. Make sure to backstitch.
Leave an opening and continue sewing from the second “+” mark to the hem. Press the seam open and sew around the opening to secure.
SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND TO THE SKIRT
With the wrong sides together, fold the waistband lengthwise. The right side of the waistband includes the waistband opening.
Pin the right side of the waistband to the right side of the skirt waistline with the raw edges up. Match the seams and notches. Sew and finish the seam. Press the seam allowance down towards the skirt.
SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND DRAWSTRING CASING
Use a ruler to mark your topstitching lines to create your casing. Sew a line 1/4” (0.6 cm) from the top and another line 1/4” (0.6 cm) from the seam.
SKIRT | INSERT THE SKIRT DRAWSTRING & FINAL PRESS
Add safety pins to both ends of your skirt drawstring. Thread the skirt drawstring, attached to the elastic, through the waistband casing, being careful not to twist it.
Once the drawstring is threaded through the casing, stretch the drawstring to make sure the gathers are distributed evenly. If sewing the Ivie Skirt, you are finished. Give your Ivie a final press!
