PATTERN DETAILS

The Max Tee is the first of our planned Spring/Summer releases. The samples I’ve made have already become a staple in my everyday wardrobe, and I hope you’ll love the pattern as much as I do. The Max Tee is a boxy knit top with a muscle tee shoulder shape and a dropped armhole. There are two lengths: a cropped tee and a hip length with hem facings. The neckline includes three options: a neck facing, a rib neckband, and a mock neckband.

Max Tee with a Rib Neck & Cropped Length
Fabric Source || Wool Blend Micro Rib Knit in Peridot from Blackbird

Max Tee with a Mock Neck & Hip Length
Fabric Source || Banff Ultra Thick 1×1 Rib from Surge Fabric Shop

The pattern is listed as ADVANCED BEGINNER sewing level. The Max is a great option for those newer to sewing as well as those who would like a quick sew. The most challenging steps are attaching and sewing the facings. There are detailed, step-by-step illustrated instructions to guide you along the way, and if you’d like more help, the Chalk and Notch Patterns Facebook Group is a great place to get support. Many of our testers are members there, so you have great resources if you ever need them.

We will also have a photo sew-along soon. We’ll link to it here once it’s live. Whether this is your first pattern or you’re a seasoned professional, we want to provide you with all the resources you need.

Max Tee Size Chart: 0 – 30, two bust cups

It is common for body measurements to fall across a few different sizes, and you can use the body measurements in the chart below to determine your size (or sizes). For this pattern, it is recommended to reference the high bust and full bust measurements. Use the high bust and full bust measurements to determine your size. If you fall between sizes, size down. It is always recommended to sew a test garment to confirm fit.

This pattern includes two bust cup options, and the cup size is determined by calculating the difference between the high and full bust.

If the difference between your high bust and full bust is between 0” and 2” (5 cm) use the A/B cup. If the difference is between 2” (5 cm) and 4” (10 cm) use the C/D cup. If you have more than a 4” (10 cm) difference, you may need a full bust adjustment. More details are in the custom fitting section of the tutorial.

Finished Garment Measurements

The Max Tee is designed to have 5” (12.5 cm) of ease through the full bust. There is 12” (30.5 cm) of ease through the waist.

To find the finished length, measure from the center back neck to the center back hem. The finished length of the crop top ends right below the waist. The finished length of the top ends at the hip and is lower in the back. Review the finished garment measurements to determine if you would like to adjust the length.

CUSTOM-FITTING ADJUSTMENTS

All our patterns include basic custom fitting adjustments, but we have also put together a post with more details on adjusting the Max Tee here. We hope to provide you with all the help you’ll need to make a successful garment. As always, we recommend sewing a test garment in muslin or non-precious fabric first to check the fit before sewing your final version. If you need additional help or have questions, please feel free to email me or join the Chalk and Notch Patterns Facebook Group – I’m always happy to hear from you!

FABRIC & NOTIONS

Main Fabric

This style is designed for medium weight 25%-50% stretch knit fabric. The shape of this style is relaxed and boxy.

Using Tricot Fusible Interfacing on the armhole facing pattern pieces can accentuate the shoulder shape and works best on a stable knit. If you’re sewing the rib neckband, your pattern piece requires 75%-100% stretch and 90% recovery. Main fabric can be used if it meets the stretch and recovery requirements.

The minimum fabric required is listed. If you think you will need more for shrinkage, directional print, pattern matching or print repeat, please purchase accordingly.

Recommended Main Fabrics

Jersey, French Terry, Sweater Knit, Rib Knit, Wool Knit

Optional Fabric

1/4 yd (0.25 m) of Rib Knit for the Neckband
