So you’ve sewn your bias tape to your project but, how do you finish the ends? You can always opt for a quick straight seam however, if you’re looking for nicely finished ends that will lay flat, here are a couple of options to help.
Fold both ends back to reveal the opening. Trim right end, leaving a tail that is at least the width of the bias tape.
Unfold the left end and trim so it overlaps the raw edge of the right side by the width of the bias tape (1.5” in these photos).
Flip the right end upward.
Bring the raw end of the left piece to cross the right end perpendicularly.
Mark a diagonal line to attach 2 ends.
Sew and trim seam allowances.
Open sewn fabric, press seam allowance to one side. Sew the remaining bias to the main fabric.
Press and finish binding as desired.
METHOD ONE – USING A RULER
For this method, you’ll need a small ruler, pins, and a marking pencil or chalk. Then follow these steps.Pin and attach bias to the main fabric leaving an opening a few inches longer than the width of the bias tape.

METHOD TWO – NO MEASURING OR MARKING REQUIRED
This method is difficult to share in photo format so we’ve embedded a video to help you out. Follow the video and steps below for a super quick and easy way to finish your bias ends without any marking or measuring.- Attach bias to main fabric leaving an opening a few inches longer than the width of the bias tape.
- Fold the right end back at the end of the seam line.
- Overlap left end over folded right end.
- Continue sewing the left/top end just to the fold of the right side of the bias tape.
- Open bias tape away from the seam allowance, pushing the seam allowance toward the main fabric.
- Flip the right/bottom end so that it is perpendicular to the left/top end.
- Sew diagonally to attach the two ends.
- Trim seam allowance.
- That’s it! Open bias tape and press.
