Sewing Tip | Finishing Seams on Different Fabrics
Just starting out in your sewing practice and want to take your sewing to the next level? Today we're sharing all about seam finishes for different fabrics to help reduce fraying and create a professional looking finish on your sewing projects.
SEAM FINISHES FOR SEWING WITH KNITS
Note that most knit fabrics like jersey, interlock, etc will not fray or easily unravel but, here are a few options you might choose when finishing your seams.
- If your knit won't fray, you can simply leave the edges raw, no need to finish them.
- Use pinking shears to trim raw edges and create an interesting seam finish.
- For a more professional looking finish and to keep edges from rolling, use a serger/overlocker machine to overlock the edges.
SEAM FINISHES FOR SEWING WITH WOVENS
The edges of woven fabrics will fray so it's recommended to finish the seams to prevent unraveling and ensure your sewing projects last. Here are some recommended options.
- If a sewing machine is not available to you or you're working on a project that won't be laundered often, pinking shears can be used to reduce fraying.
- Available on most domestic sewing machines, a zig-zag stitch sewn close to the raw edge is an easy way to finish the seam allowance and will stop fraying near the stitch line.
- If you're aiming for longevity and a professional looking finish, using a serger/overlocker to overlock the edges will create a lovely clean finish.
SEWING THICKER KNITS OR BOILED WOOL
- The cut edge of these fabrics won’t fray so they can be left raw, no seam finish necessary.
