Orchid Sew Along | Sew Mitered Corners and Hem Skirt

It's time to sew the mitered corners and hem the skirt. We'll start by prepping the hem.

PREP HEM

Prep the hem by stitching a baste stitch 3/8” (1 cm) from the cut edge of the hem and slit extension. Use this stitch line as a guide to fold the hem and sides of the slit to the wrong side on both mitered corners. Press the 3/8” (1 cm) folded edge in place.

Alternatively, you can overlock the hem and slit extension.

SEW MITERED CORNER

With the right sides together, fold the mitered corners and match the notches while keeping the folded edges in place, and sew at 3/8” (1 cm). Make a small clip at the mitered corner, being careful not to clip the seam.

Turn the mitered corner right side out and press. Repeat for the remaining mitered corner.

HEM SKIRT

Pin the hem in place from the wrong side and edgestitch. We choose edgestitching from the wrong side, but you can also stitch from the right side depending on your preference. Turn right side out and press the hem.

We're close to being finished with our Orchid dress! We'll wrap up by sewing the waistband casing and attaching the bodice to the skirt.
