Orchid Sew Along | Sew Pockets and Side Seams

Now we will begin to assemble the skirts. We'll start by sewing the pockets and move to sew the skirt side seams.

ATTACH THE POCKET FACING TO THE UNDER POCKET LINING

Finish the angled edge of the pocket facing or fold it under at 3/8” (1 cm). Pin the pocket facing right side up to the right side of the under pocket lining.

Edgestitch in place. This strengthens the pocket bag lining at the waistband. Alternatively, if you are using main fabric for the pocket bag, you can omit this step.

ATTACH THE UPPER POCKET LINING TO THE FRONT SKIRT

With the right sides together, sew the upper pocket lining to the front skirt at the angled seam.

UNDERSTITCH THE UPPER POCKET LINING

Press the seam allowance towards the upper pocket lining. Understitch the upper pocket lining, catching the seam allowance.

ATTACH THE UNDER POCKET LINING TO THE UPPER POCKET LINING

With the right sides together, pin the under pocket lining to the upper pocket lining. Sew the curved edge and finish the seam. Repeat for the other side.

EDGESTITCH THE POCKET TOP AND SIDE SEAMS

Lay the front skirt right side up and line up the pocket notches. Pin the pocket in place and edgestitch the top edge and side seam at 1/4” (0.6 cm). Press.

FINISH THE CENTER FRONT SKIRT SEAM AND CORNER

Finish the center front skirt seams separately, turning the corner at the slit.

PRESS MITERED SLIT

Prep the front mitered hem by pressing up the fusible portion, wrong sides together, which is 1 3/8” (3.5 cm) from the hem and slit line. Unfold.

PRESS BACK HEM

Prep the back hem by pressing up the fusible portion, wrong sides together, which is 1 3/8” (3.5 cm) from the hem. Unfold.

ATTACH THE SIDE SEAMS

With the right sides together, sew and finish the skirt side seams. Press towards the back.

ATTACH THE CENTER FRONT SKIRT SEAM

With the right sides together, sew the center front skirt seam and backstitch at the slit notch. Press the center front seam open.

At this time we're ready to sew the mitered corners and hem the skirt.
