Hayes Sew Along | Finish Dress and Skirt Waistband

It's time to wrap up the Hayes Sew Along by attaching the skirt to the dress bodice and adding a waistband to the skirt. Let's get going.

DRESS | SEW THE BODICE TO THE SKIRT

If sewing the dress, with the right sides together, sew the bodice to the skirt, matching the seams. If sewing the open back view, the side back bodice will finish at the side back skirt.

Sew and finish the seam. Remove any visible basting stitches. Press the seam allowance down towards the skirt.

DRESS | FINAL PRESS

If sewing the dress, you are finished. Give your Hayes a final press!

SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND

If sewing the skirt, with the right sides together, sew the side seam of the skirt waistband, starting at the top and stopping at the first notch. Make sure to backstitch. Leave an opening and continue sewing from the second notch to the hem.

Press the seam open and sew a line 1/4" (0.6 cm) from the seam to secure the seam allowance.

SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND TO THE SKIRT

With the wrong sides together, fold the waistband in half lengthwise.

Pin the folded waistband to the right side of the skirt waistline. Make sure the side seam openings are on the outside of the finished skirt. Match the seams and notches.

Sew and finish the seam. Press the seam allowance down towards the skirt.

SKIRT | SEW THE WAISTBAND DRAWSTRING CASING

Use a ruler to mark your topstitching lines to create your casing.

Sew a line 1/4" (0.6 cm) from the top and another line 1/4" (0.6 cm) from the seam.

Thread the drawstrings attached to the elastic, through the waistband casing, being careful to twist them.

Once the drawstrings are threaded through the casing, stretch the drawstrings to make sure the gathers are distributed evenly. Tie the side bows.

SKIRT | FINAL PRESS

If sewing the skirt, you are finished. Give your Hayes a final press!
