Rivi Sew Along | Sew the Pockets

In this post, we will go over adding pockets to the dress view. These are inseam pockets sewn with French seams. If you prefer a video tutorial, sewing the pockets (steps 23-26) can be found on your YouTube channel here. 

If sewing the dress, place one set of pockets wrong side up. Draw a sew line from the top notch across to the sewing line, 3/4“ (2 cm) in from the side seam and back across to the lower notch.

Place the front bodice right side up. With the right sides together, pin the pocket to the front bodice, matching the notches. 

Sew on your guide, pivoting at the corners. Trim the seam allowance to half, make sure to cut a notch in the corners, but stop just before the stitching. 

Press the seam allowance toward the pocket, and understitch the seam between the notches to keep it secure on the inside. 

Press the pocket to the inside of the garment with the front bodice wrong side up. 

Place the back pocket wrong side up between the front pocket bag and the front bodice. 

With the wrong sides together, pin and sew the pocket curves seam at 1/4” (0.6 cm). Make sure not to sew to the pocket to the bodice. 

Trim the seam allowance to 1/8” (0.3 cm). Turn the pocket inside out and press.

Press the right sides together, pin and sew a second pass at 3/8” (1 cm), fully enclosing the first pass. Press. 

The pocket will look like this from the front. 

Optional: edgestitch the pocket to the front bodice to secure it.
